The Must-Read Romantasy Books of October 2026

This October is a big month for romantasy readers. Pretty much every fan of the genre already has October 27 circled in red on their calendars. It's the release date of A Court of Splintered Harmony, the long-awaited sixth installment in Sarah J. Maas's mega-bestselling A Court of Thorns and Roses series. With a plot—and character focus—still largely shrouded in mystery, we're all basically counting down the hours until we can find out what's next for the world of Prythian for ourselves.

But Maas' latest doorstopper isn't the only big release hitting shelves this month. The final books in popular series from Thea Guanzon and Briar Boleyn arrive on October 6th and 20th, respectively, and two buzzy new titles (Under the Iron Sky and Our Dark Incantations) that were originally popular fanfics are also headed our way. Thank goodness peak cozy reading season is about to be upon us. We're going to need it.

Here are some of the best romantasy books hitting shelves this October.

This Shattered Tempest by Thea Guanzon

Release Date: October 6 from Harper Voyager

Why You Should Read It: The final installment in Thea Guanzon’s popular Hurricane Wars series, the trilogy may have begun its life as a Reylo fanfic, but is now a propulsive story all its own. Picking up after the angsty cliffhanger that closed A Monsoon Rising, both Talasyn and Alaric must make hard choices about where their loyalties lie and what kind of world they want to live in. (All while engaging in some top-notch yearning, of course.

Publisher’s Description: Throughout their political marriage, Alaric and Talasyn struggled to resist the undeniable pull between them, even as rising tensions forced them on opposite sides of a looming war. Hand in hand, they vanquished the cataclysmic threat of the Moonless Dark—and started to hope for a future together.

That hope is shattered when a devastating attack sets off a chain of events that tears them apart once more. Now, as two rival nations prepare for a final, decisive clash, the Master of the Shadowforged Legion and the last Lightweaver fight to find their way back to each other. But the odds are stacked against them, and time is running out…

Is love enough to rewrite destiny? Can a new beginning rise from the ruins of the past? Or are Alaric and Talasyn doomed to meet as enemies on one last battlefield? This explosive third and final book brings the beloved Hurricane Wars series to a stunning conclusion—where passion and power collide, and the fate of a divided world hangs in the balance.

Reap & Sow by Charlotte B. Plumb

Release Date: October 6 from Berkley

Why You Should Read It: This debut romantasy hails from Berkley’s intriguing new crossover imprint, targeted at releasing titles with crossover appeal to adults and young readers, and follows the story of Eda, a young woman forced to make a pact with a (handsome, naturally) demon and trade 50 years of her life for her two brothers’ freedom. Set in a Gothic, Victorian-coded city, the conflict between demons and humankind is much darker and more violent than many regular readers of this genre might expect, and the tantalizing connection between Eda and the demon Kit is the slowest of slow burns. Settle in for the long haul.

Publisher’s Description: The penniless in Blackbridge have only two choices: Sell the body or sell the soul. And thanks to Eda Shaw, business is booming.

Indentured to a capricious demon known as Mr. Night, Eda and her brothers arrange illicit Pacts on his behalf, luring the city's most desperate into trading years of their lives for their deepest desires. When a Pact goes awry and her brothers are arrested, Eda realizes she’ll need an infernal ally of her own: Kit'rath, an infuriating demon with a curious penchant for humanity and the only being in Blackbridge that Mr. Night seems to fear. As they race to rescue her family and save the city from ruin, an undeniable connection sparks between mortal and demon.

Now, Eda risks losing her heart to the one who claims her years—and saving herself may prove the steepest cost of all.

Under the Iron Sky by A. T. Emerald

Release Date: October 13 from Delacorte Press

Why You Should Read It: Another entry from the seemingly unstoppable Harry Potter fanfic-to-trad-publishing pipeline, Under the Iron Sky joins such recent romantasy hits as The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy and Rose in Chains. Set in a dystopian fantasy world ravaged by a brutal war between magic and technology, it follows a human commander who is captured by the enemy’s most feared general. An enemies-to-lovers story that is truly not kidding about the enemies part; the line between hatred and attraction blurs really quickly in this addictively fast-paced read that goes by much quicker than its hefty page count would otherwise indicate.

Publisher’s Description: Vordell was beautiful once. Its people lived in harmony, and their civilization flourished as they learned to harness and control the power of Light.

Then the darkness came.

The Iron Sky unfolded dark clouds across the land, thick enough to choke out the light of the suns. The ground cracked, releasing vicious creatures and evil magic-wielding soldiers. The Dar’rak—an enemy long believed to be buried and forgotten—returned to claim the world above.

Soraya Tollmere has spent most of her life on the front lines of the brutal war that followed. Now a high-ranking commander, she knows loss better than anyone.

By day, she leads troops across ruined landscapes and guides covert teams through enemy territory. By night, she meets with a Dar’rak defector who has kept humanity alive with his steady stream of secrets.

On a mission to investigate his latest lead—one that could turn the tide of the war—Soraya is captured by the Demon, the Dar’rak’s most feared soldier, his true identity unknown.

His orders are simple: Break the human commander and uncover where the humans are keeping a weapon that could win them the war. But as he gets to know the fierce warrior, the lines between interrogator and enemy, prisoner and ally, begin to blur.

Devastating truths surface and loyalties shatter, forcing Soraya to decide who to trust in a world where Light is dying—and where her greatest enemy may be her only salvation.

The Tarot Trials by Katee Robert

Release Date: October 20 from Tor Books

Why You Should Read It: Katee Robert is best known for her Dark Olympus series, a steamy, modern reimagining of an assortment of stories about various romances and relationships from Greek mythology. (Neon Gods, the one that started it all, was about Hades and Persephone and things only get more intense from there.) Her new book, The Tarot Trials, is a bit of a swerve from her usual into more traditional fantasy waters, and is all the more intriguing because of that fact. Featuring intriguing worldbuilding, a unique tarot-based magical system, and a gutsy heroine out to avenge her mother’s death, it’s a propulsive, twisty ride.

Publisher’s Description:  The deck has always been stacked against her.

Kestrel has trained her whole life to compete in the Tarot Trials. Her mother won once, earning a place among the five ruling Cinque—then paid for it with her life, executed for alleged treason against the Minor Court.

But fortune favors the bold.

Now it falls to Kestrel to take up her mother’s mantle as Champion of the Moon, enter the Trials, and face her fate. If she can master her new powers of shadow and illusion, navigate the poisonous game of alliances and lies, and corner the fellow Champion who dealt the killing blow to her mother years ago, she may uncover the truth she’s seeking without losing her head… or her heart. But in the Trials, betrayal is a question of when, not if. And winning the game isn’t about what she must do to win, but who she needs to survive.

With Hearts of Flame by Briar Boleyn

Release Date: October 20 from MIRA

Why You Should Read It: The final installment in Briar Boleyn’s popular Bloodwing Academy series ups the spice and the stakes for every character involved.

Publisher’s Description: I thought surviving a vampire academy was the hardest thing I’d ever have to do.

Then I fell in love with a boy who can turn into a dragon.

After the events in Veilmar, my only concern is for Blake. Will he survive the monster who possesses him? But as I fight a battle for the soul of the man I love, my dearest friend is up against the greatest danger a dragon rider can ever face.

Meanwhile, as Bloodwing reels from loss and betrayal, an ancient prophecy tightens its grip, and an unexpected triad is rising—one powerful enough to change the balance of power in Sangratha forever.

As the Veil cracks and the dead come back to haunt us, love becomes a weapon—sharp enough to destroy the world or strong enough to forge a new one.

Our Dark Incantations by Wanda Hellmund

Release Date: October 20 from Ace

Why You Should Read It: The second new release this month that got its start in life as Dramione fanfiction, Our Dark Incantations is a dark academia fantasy set at a magical university recovering from a devastating war. (Sound familiar?) An enemies-to-lovers story about an ex-healer forced to partner with an arrogant former soldier (and rumored assassin) in the university’s dark magic program who find themselves investigating a murder together; it's full of plot twists and big feelings.

Publisher’s Description:  After the war, ex-healer Mira Winters swore she’d never touch magic again. And yet here she is attending the newly reopened Ivercrest University, enrolled in the wrong magic department, paired up with the absolute wrong partner—the infuriating Aidric Dawson.

Instead of learning how to make a potion strong enough to heal her incurable scar, Mira attends demonology lessons, casts deadly spells…and is accidentally dragged into a murder investigation on campus—one with devastating ripples that bleed into the magical world far beyond the university.

Even more devastating? Aidric Dawson. Rumored to have been a high-ranking soldier during the war, the lethal Wielder is arrogant, aristocratic, and shrouded in secrets…but with his own wounds from the war, he may also be the only one who truly understands Mira.

A labyrinth of clues pulls Mira and Aidric deep into a sinister plot hiding in the shadows of magical society, threatening war once more. Can the two enemies work together without losing their hearts—or their lives—in the process?

A Court of Splintered Harmony by Sarah J. Maas

Release Date: October 27 from Bloomsbury Publishing

Why You Should Read It: You already know. This long-awaited sixth installment in Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series is shrouded in mystery. We have no idea what character(s) it will primarily focus on, or how (or even  if!) it will work in all those revelations from the most recent Crescent City novel, House of Flame and Shadow. All we do know is that Koschei the Deathless, older brother of the Bone Carver and Stryga, Weaver of the Wood, is waking up, and that’s bad news for the Fae and human lands. At least we’ll all be up late reading together.

Publisher’s Description: What was broken will be remade.

Deep in the heart of the continent, Koschei the Deathless is stirring. Though he's been bound to a mountain lake for millennia, the insidious threat of his return now spreads across the Fae territories, attracting powerful allies hell-bent on reclaiming what was once theirs: the human lands.

The Night Court will not stand idly by while innocents are attacked. But with Prythian still piecing itself together in the wake of the devastating Hybern War, the task of uniting is proving more difficult by the day.

To make matters worse, those who rule and protect the Night Court are reeling from recent betrayals and revealed truths. The rifts dividing them seem insurmountable.

But to defeat Koschei's creeping shadow, they must find a way back to each other and resurrect their former alliances. To survive, they must find a way to repair the splintered harmony all around them.
